Upon his arrival at the SPD headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig, Abalos was taken to the office of the SPD’s anti-criminality division while his son, Mandaluyong Mayor Benjamin "Benhur" Abalos Jr., inspected the detention cell.
The cell was intended for former President and now Pampanga second district Representative Gloria Macapaga-Arroyo, who was also arrested for alleged electoral sabotage in 2007.
His arrest warrant was issued past 10 a.m. on Tuesday, effectively rejecting his motion that asked the court to determine probable cause of the complaint against him.
The former poll chief arrived at the Pasay City court, where he gave himself up, past 11 a.m.
Abalos was arrested after the Comelec filed an electoral sabotage complaint against him. The complaint alleged that he helped rig results of the polls in 2007, resulting in zero votes for senatorial candidates that ran against the Arroyo-led administration party.
Abalos denied allegations of former South Cotabato provincial election supervisor Lilian Suan-Radam and former North Cotabato provincial election supervisor Yogie Martirizar, who accused him of giving them direct instructions to favor senatorial bets of the Arroyo administration.
Both Radam and Martirizar said that in April 2007, Abalos met them personally in Davao City and instructed them to make former President Arroyo's Team Unity candidates win 12-0.
Both former local election officials claimed that Abalos told them the instructions came from Malacañang, adding they were pressured into signing extra copies of certificate of canvass and statement of votes to alter the results of the mid-term polls.
The Pasay court earlier issued arrest warrants for Radam and Martirizar and Captain Peter Reyes of the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines also for allegedly rigging the 2007 elections. - SunStarManila.
